Yucca pallida (English common name : Pale Leaf-Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca pallida grows solitary and without trunk or forms small groups. The variable blue to gray-green leaves are 20 to 35 cm long, 1 to 1.5 cm and at the base up to 3 cm wide. Like all representatives of the Chaenocarpa series Rupicolae, they are finely serrated on the leaf margins.

The branched inflorescence that begins above the leaves is 1 to 3 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, white to cream-colored flowers are 5 to 6.5 cm in length and 2 to 3.5 cm in diameter. The flowering period extends from April to June.

Occurrence and systematics

Yucca pallida is related to Yucca rupicola , another representative of the section Chaenocarpa series Rupicolae . However, it can be clearly distinguished by the unique, twisted leaves.

Yucca pallida is frost hardy to –20 ° C in Central Europe, Germany and Mannheim . Amazingly, it is one of the hardest yuccas in Central Europe, although there is hardly any frost in the range in Texas. Without any protection, this species has been cultivated in the F. Hochstätter collection for almost 20 years. However, it is rare in the collections.

The botanical name pallida refers to the rather pale color of the leaves.

Yucca pallida is common in the " Blackland Prairie " in Texas in calcareous, stony soils and in grasslands at altitudes between 200 and 300 m. This species often grows together with various types of cacti .

The first description by Susan Adams McKelvey under the name Yucca pallida was published in 1947.
