Yvonne Mokgoro

Yvonne Mokgoro (born October 19, 1950 in Galeshewe near Kimberley ) is a South African lawyer. Between 1994 and 2009 she was a judge at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa .

Education and professional career

Mokgoro received her education at St Boniface High School, which she graduated in 1970. She then completed part-time studies at the University of Bophuthatswana , where she was awarded the BJuris degree in 1982 and the Bachelor of Law in 1984 . During her studies she worked as a nurse and saleswoman and eventually got a job in the Justice Department of Bophuthatswana . After completing her undergraduate studies, she was a prosecutor at the District Court of Mmabatho hired. From 1984 Mokgoro worked as a lecturer at her alma mater , where she rose to become a private lecturer . In 1992 she moved to the University of the Western Cape and the following year to the Human Science Research Council, where she specialized in human rights . At the same time, she gave lectures in this area at the University of Pretoria . In October 1994 Mokgoro was appointed judge at the newly established Constitutional Court by Nelson Mandela . She held this position until 2009. At that point, the maximum 15-year term of a constitutional judge provided for in the South African constitution expired and Mokgoro retired.
