The serpentine ground owl ( Standfussiana lucernea ), sometimes also called Standfuss- Zackenbinden- Erdule , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 36 to 47 millimeters. The basic color of the upper side of the forewing varies from lead gray to bluish gray to earth brown. Ring and kidney defects are usually very indistinct. The transverse lines are dark gray and strongly jagged, sometimes blurred. The top of the hind wings is gray in color and is darkened in the submarginal region . The fringes are silky white.

Caterpillar

Younger caterpillars are mostly colored in shades of green and provided with brown or pink spots, but have no black drawing elements. The adults are dark olive green, sometimes have contrasting yellow spots on the back, but are sometimes almost monochrome.

Similar species

The basic color of Standfussiana dalmata usually tends more to light gray to yellowish gray tones. In the Simulans ground owl ( Rhyacia simulans ) the ring blemish is lighter and more clearly developed.

distribution and habitat

The species occurs in Fennoscandinavia , on the British Isles , the high altitudes of the Alps , Pyrenees and the Apennines as well as on the Balkan Peninsula . Outside Europe, it has been proven to be heading east to the Elburs Mountains . The main habitat is steep, rocky coastal areas, karst mountain landscapes and scree and rubble heaps up to heights of 3000 meters.

Way of life

The serrated ground owl forms one generation per year, the moths of which fly between June and September. They are active during the day and at night, suck nectar on flowers and visit artificial light sources and bait . The caterpillars feed on various low plants and include: Bellflower - ( Campanula ), sedum - ( Sedum ), saxifrage - ( Saxifraga ), Primrose ( Primula ) and chickweed TYPES ( Stellaria ). The caterpillars overwinter.

Danger

The zigzag ground owl occurs in Germany in a few mountainous places in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and is listed on the Red List of Endangered Species in Category V ("on the warning list").
