Zaghouan ( Arabic زغوان) is a small town and a municipality ( municipalité ) in northern Tunisia with around 16,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Zaghouan Governorate .
location
The city lies at the foot of the Djebel Zaghouan at an altitude of about 160 to 200 m above sea level. d. M. The distance to the capital Tunis in the north is approx. 55 km (driving distance); Hammamet Beach is around 54 km to the east.
population
The majority of the population consists of Berbers who immigrated from the surrounding mountain regions in the second half of the 20th century ; However, colloquial language is mostly Arabic .
economy
The city is the center of a water-rich and fertile agricultural region with fields and olive tree plantations; numerous springs and the construction of several hammams have made the small town a recreational center for Tunisians. Today, many residents of Zaghuan commute to Tunis for work.
history
The city called Ziqua was the starting point of an aqueduct built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138) in antiquity , through which Carthage, more than 60 km away , was supplied with water. The spring was captured in Roman times in a still partially preserved spring sanctuary, which was adorned by numerous statues that are now in the Bardo Museum in Tunis.
During the Second World War there was a French prisoner-of-war camp near Zaghouan , which since mid-May 1943 had been occupied by an average of 2,600 mostly German soldiers. In August 1944 there was a femicide there . The perpetrator was sentenced to death by a French military court and shot. Five other suspects each received 20 years ' imprisonment and were taken to civil prison in Tunis. In the spring of 1945 the camp was closed.

- The townscape of Zaghouan is characterized by winding streets and small squares with whitewashed houses.
- The ruins of a city gate date from Roman times.
- Above the city are the restored ruins of a spring sanctuary ( nymphaeum ).
- The Zaghouan Aqueduct is located a few kilometers northwest of the city.
