Zahájí (Lesná)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zahájí (German Waldheim ) is a desert on the corridors of the municipality of Lesná in the Czech Republic . It is located two kilometers east of Georgenberg directly on the border between Bavaria and Bohemia.

geography

Zahájí is located on the brook Zahájský potok ( Waldheimer Bach ), a source brook of the Zottbach , in the Upper Palatinate Forest on the German border. Troidelberg (708 m) rises to the northwest, Štádlerův Kopec ( Aschenstein , 772 m) to the northeast , Schlossberg (669 m) to the south and Kňourek ( Georgenberg , 726 m) to the east .

On the Bohemian side, almost all villages that belonged to the restricted area along the border, which was ideologically referred to as the Iron Curtain , went out after the Second World War . The surrounding area was České Nové Domky ( Neuhäusl ) in the northwest, Česká Ves ( Bohemian village ) in the north, Stará Knížecí Huť and Háje in the northeast, Jedlina in the east, Hagenhaus and Lösselberg in the south, Lösselmühle and Vorder Waldheim in the southwest, Schwanhof in the west and Neukirchen and Neudorf in the northwest.

history

Waldheim was first mentioned in 1608 as a glassmaking settlement. It was built around a glassworks that belonged to the Pfraumberg Chamber of Commerce and was owned by the glassmaker Paul Schürer in 1592 , who was raised to the nobility that year by Emperor Rudolf II as court glassmaker with the addition of "von Waldheim" to his name. The Bavarian-Bohemian border has always led through Vorder Waldheim. Property No. 11 was on the border, an inn that is said to have served Bavarian beer on one side and Bohemian beer on the other. There has been evidence of a customs post in Vorder Waldheim since 1776.

After the dissolution of patrimonial Waldheim formed a community in the district of Tachau with the districts of Vorder and Hinter Waldheim . In 1930 there were 304 people living in Waldheim.

After the Munich Agreement , the village was added to the German Reich in 1938 and belonged to the Tachau district until 1945 . In 1939 the community of Waldheim had 313 inhabitants.

In 1948 Waldheim received the Czech name Zahájí at the same time the districts Přední Waldheim were renamed in Přední Zahájí , Zadní Waldheim in Zadní Zahájí and Zámek Waldheim in Zámek . After the communist government of Czechoslovakia declared the area along the strictly guarded border opposite Bavaria a restricted area, the village was cleared and demolished in the 1950s.

Today a hiking trail leads between Vorder Waldheim and Přední Zahájí across the German-Czech border.
