Zaton (German Zackon ) is a village in the municipality of Dubrovnik in the Croatian county of Dubrovnik-Neretva . Zaton is located in a bay of the Adriatic Sea and is about 8 km north of Dubrovnik. The name Zaton is derived from the Croatian word zaton (English "bay"). The village consists of the following 4 parts: Vrbica, Štikovica, Zaton Mali and Zaton Veliki .

history

During the times of the Ragusa Republic , Zaton was a popular place to build holiday and recreational homes. During the Croatian War from October 1991 to April 1992, Zaton was a base of the Yugoslav People's Army . Much was destroyed or stolen from the troops who inhabited the houses during this war.

In the summer of 2001 and 2002, Zaton was hit by several forest fires, but none of them damaged or destroyed any houses.

Todays situation

The village lives mainly from tourism in the high season (June - September). Although Zaton is one of the few villages without a hotel in the Dubrovnik area, many tourists visit the village every year. They live mainly in rooms and apartments .
