Zdzisław Augustynek

Zdzisław Augustynek (born November 25, 1925 in Jordanów , † October 29, 2001 in Warsaw ) was a Polish philosopher . In his scientific work he mainly deals with the philosophy of physics .

Life

Augustynek attended the primary school in Biecz and then the grammar school in Gorlice . During the German occupation he went back to Biecz and attended the underground high school there. After the Second World War he graduated from high school in Gorlice in 1946. He then studied philosophy from 1946 to 1950 at the University of Breslau , where he obtained his master's degree in 1950 . He then went from 1951 to 1953 as a doctoral student at the University of Kiev and from 1953 to 1955 the University of Moscow , where he received his doctorate in 1955 with the thesis Znaczenie filozoficzne szczególnej teorii wzulędności ( doctoral supervisor : Chalil Magomedowitsch Fatalijew ). After his return to Poland, he initially worked as an adjunct at the Jagiellonian University from 1955 to 1963 and headed the Department of Natural Philosophy from 1957 to 1963. There he completed his habilitation in 1963 with the thesis Determinizm fizyczny and worked as a lecturer from 1963 to 1971 . In addition, he headed the chair for natural science philosophy from 1964 to 1969. He spent the academic year 1966/1967 in the USA and carried out research at Harvard University , the University of Pittsburg and the University of Chicago . After his return in 1967 he became deputy director of the Institute of Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University, which he took over from 1969 to 1974. He was awarded the title of associate professor in 1971. He was appointed full professor at the University of Warsaw in 1977 , where he headed the Department of Philosophy of Science until 2000. Augustynek retired in 1996.
