Ze'ev Elkin

Ze'ev Elkin ( Hebrew זאב אלקין; * April 3, 1971 in Kharkov , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Israeli politician of the Kadima and Likud , who has been a member of the Knesset since 2006 and was temporarily Deputy Foreign Minister . From May 2015 to May 2016, Elkin was Minister for Immigration in Israel. He has been Minister of the Environment since August 2016 .

Life

Before his immigration ( Aliyah ) to Israel on December 5, 1990, Elkin was active in the Soviet Union as General Secretary of the Bnei Akiva movement. After his entry he did his military service as a private in the Defense Forces . He then completed a degree in Jewish history and mathematics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , which he completed in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed a subsequent postgraduate course in Jewish history in 1994 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with a Master of Arts (MA).

On April 17, 2006 Elkin became a member of the Knesset for the Kadima in the 17th electoral term and has been a member of this since then. During his parliamentary membership in the 17th electoral term from April 2006 to February 2009, among other things, he was chairman of the subcommittee for the reception of immigrant children and young people and a member of the Knesset committees for finance, for the constitution, law and justice, for education, culture and sport. for children's rights, for immigration, immigration admission and affairs of the diaspora as well as the Knesset committee against drug and alcohol abuse and the subcommittee on problems of pension payments.

During the 18th legislative period , between February 2009 and February 2013, Elkin temporarily chaired the Main Committee and the Sub-Committees for Judea and Samaria and for Outer Space, as well as chairing the Joint Committee to deliberate on the Legal and Administrative Order Bill. He was also a member of the Knesset Committees on Foreign Affairs and Defense, Science and Technology, Public Petitions, Immigration, Immigration and Diaspora Affairs, and the Joint Defense Budget Committee. During this time he was also temporarily chairman of the lobby groups for higher education at universities and colleges and for the empowerment of the Jewish people and chairman of the Likud faction in the Knesset.

In the 19th electoral term , since February 5, 2013, Elkin was chairman of the main committee and a member of the Knesset committees for finance and foreign affairs and defense.

On March 18, 2013 Elkin became Deputy Foreign Minister, holding this position as representative of Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then Avigdor Lieberman until May 12, 2014. Since then, he has been chairman of the Knesset Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense and a member of the Main Committee and the Knesset Committees on Economic Affairs, for State Control and the Joint Defense Budget Committee.

He is currently working on his doctoral thesis for a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ) in Jewish history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
