The Freie Vogel & Unverhofft colliery , also known as the Schüren mine , was one of the oldest civil engineering mines in the Ruhr mining industry and was located in the Schüren district of Dortmund . Its name goes back to the earlier assumptions "Free Bird" and "Unverhofft", which were declared extinct in 1782 and 1784.
The establishment of the new mining law union “Free Bird and Unexpected” was in June 1841, irregular dismantling had already taken place beforehand. It was hard coal and until 1899 also Eisenstein dismantled. In the beginning, both were mostly brought to the nearby Hermannshütte in Hörde by horse and cart . It was not until the 1880s that the mine received a direct connection to the Hörder Kohlenbahn and thus to the network of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . In 1891 a briquette factory was put into operation.
The highest conveying capacity was achieved by 1,558 employees in 1914 with 395,837 tons.
1923 took over mining AG Lorraine the union "Free Bird and unexpectedly" ; As part of the general rationalization movement in the Ruhr mining industry, the colliery was shut down in 1925 - four years before the outbreak of the global economic crisis - in order to be able to transfer its production quotas to other, more efficient mines of the Lorraine Group.
Four former colliery buildings (brand control, workshop and two office buildings) have been preserved and are now used commercially or as residential buildings. Federal highway 236 now runs across the eastern part of the former colliery area .
