The Hortensia colliery in Herdecke is a former hard coal mine . The mine was shut down several times and then put back into operation.

Mining history

In 1834 the courage was lodged with the mining authority , on September 17, 1836 a square was awarded . After the award, research work was carried out first, then the mine was shut down. From April of 1838 research work was carried out again, on August 20 of the same year the plant was shut down again. The mine was put back into operation on May 18, 1841, and a test tunnel that had been set up in 1837 was continued . On July 3 of 1844 the mine was in by year-end deadline set at the end of the mine was in operation again and the following year the mine was shut down again.

In 1856 the mine was back in operation. On January 6, 1856, the upper adit reached seam 1 and on March 18 of the same year the middle adit reached seam 2. In the same year, the excavation of the seam was started, and the lower adit was also driven to the east. In October of the following year the mine was shut down again. The reason for the closure were the seams that were not worth building . On August 1, 1919, the mine was put back into operation. In the quarry Neuhaus was a tunnel set. The tunnel mouth hole was located between the lower and upper tunnel, on today's Jungferneiche road. The tunnel is presumably identical to the central tunnel excavated in 1856, at least the tunnel was located in the area of the central tunnel. The three tunnels had a driven length of 150 to 200 meters. In the same year, work began on mining the seam in the central tunnel about 15 meters from the tunnel mouth hole . In the center rib was the promotion started. The mining extended up to 400 meters to the west.

On December 30, 1921, operations ceased and on August 1, 1922, the Hortensia colliery was shut down again. On October 1st, 1946, the city of Herdecke put the old tunnel back into operation. In February 1948 the Hortensia colliery was finally shut down.

Promotion and workforce

The first workforce dates from 1856, there were six miners on the mine. The first production figures are from 1918, with six miners, 105 tons of hard coal were extracted. In 1920, 62 miners mined 2,466 tons of hard coal. The last known production and workforce figures for the mine are from 1921, with 15 miners working 931 tons of hard coal.
