Zeev Friedman

Zeev Friedman ( Hebrew זאב פרידמן; * June 10, 1944 in Siberia ; † 6. September 1972 in Fuerstenfeldbruck ) was an Israeli Bantam - weightlifters , who at the Munich Olympics attack was murdered by Palestinian terrorists.

Friedman moved from Poland to Israel in 1960, where he started gymnastics but soon switched to weightlifting. After his military service, he worked as a sports teacher in the Haifa suburb of Kiryat Haim and started for the local sports club Hapoel Kiryat Haim . He was Israeli champion seven times in a row, in 1969 he was seventh at the World Championships in Warsaw and in 1971 he won the bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Manila.

Friedman was considered the greatest Israeli hope for a medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics . Despite three Israeli records during the competition , however, he was only twelfth.

Friedman died in the unsuccessful rescue attempt at the Fürstenfeldbruck airfield by the gun of a hostage taker in the east of the two helicopters.
