Munich 72 - Das Assentat is a German television film from 2011. Directed by Dror Zahavi , the hostage drama is re- enacted during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich . It was first broadcast on March 19, 2012 on ZDF .

action

At the beginning of the film, the Essen police chief Anna Gerbers is informed that she will be part of the security forces there during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The picture then changes to the training camp of the Israeli national fencing team . There, Ankie Spitzer brings her husband André the news that he will take part in the 1972 Olympics in Munich as a trainer for the Israeli fencers. It then shows the preparations that the Palestinian terrorist squad of the organization Black September is making to take the Israeli team hostage during the games. The catastrophic security precautions taken by the German police are also shown (none of the so-called "Olys" officers are armed!), As well as the authorities' complete inexperience in dealing with serious violent crime, especially international terrorism .

Shortly after the start of the games, the eight-member Palestinian terrorist squad led by its leader Issa entered the Israelis' quarters at 4:10 a.m. on September 5, and there were fights between hostage-takers and hostages. The first hostage is shot dead and another is seriously injured, who later succumbs to her injuries. However, one of the Israelis managed to escape and informed the security forces. Negotiations then begin between the crisis team and Issa, who are demanding the release of around 130 Palestinians and the German RAF terrorist Ulrike Meinhof as well as an airplane. After the ultimatum could be extended several times, the Bavarian police are planning a rescue operation, which, however, fails due to the live broadcast on television - the hostage-takers had not switched off the electricity - and the lack of training of the Bavarian officials. Then Issa demands to be flown out immediately with all the hostages. However, since he has to go through a tunnel in order not to have to go through the crowds and the open area, the police are planning another rescue operation, which also fails because the terrorist leader demands a patrol and discovers the police officers.

In the evening, the terrorists and their eleven hostages are flown by helicopter to the Fürstenfeldbruck military airfield , from where they can be flown to an Arab country of their choice in a Boeing 727 . Another rescue operation is planned at the airport, in which the terrorists are to be eliminated by snipers. However, since there is an information leak, it has not been passed on that there are not five terrorists as expected (therefore only five shooters are deployed), but eight. In the subsequent firefight, to which armored vehicles are added later , six terrorists and all hostages are killed when a terrorist realizes the hopelessness of the situation and shoots the hostages. A German police officer is also killed by a ricochet.

At the press conference that followed, it emerged that not all of the hostages were rescued, as previously announced, but were killed. The last scene shows the founding of the GSG-9 , headed by General Ulrich Wegener (then Lieutenant Colonel in the BGS) , in which one of the helicopter pilots is also shown.

Location

The shooting took place in the summer of 2011 in Munich and at the Oldenburg air base. The former state central bank in Munich served as the backdrop for the police crisis team.

background

The film was planned many years earlier, but Steven Spielberg anticipated the project in 2005 with Munich .
