Zef Simoni

Imzot Zef Simoni (born December 1, 1928 in Shkodra , Albania , † February 21, 2009 ) was auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Shkodra . He survived the atheist persecution of believers in Albania.

Life

Zef Simoni was ordained priest on February 9, 1961. In 1967 he was sentenced to twelve years imprisonment for his Catholic belief and interned in the Spaç prison camp by the communist rulers of Albania . During an international symposium in May 2000 he reported on the extent of the persecution of Christians in his country and on inhumane methods of torture and acts of violence. He compared the prison camp with the Mauthausen concentration camp . He documented the time of the persecution of Christians from 1944 to 1990 in his 1993 book Martirizimi i Kishës Katolik Shqiptare (1944-1990) , which was also published in an Italian translation.

1992 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Bararus and ordered him Auxiliary Bishop of Shkodra. He was ordained bishop himself on April 25, 1993 by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of a visit to Albania; Co - consecrators were Cardinal Camillo Ruini and Cardinal Jozef Tomko , Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . He was one of the first four Albanian bishops of the post-communist period.

In 2004 his resignation was granted by John Paul II. He was a member of the Albanian Bishops' Conference .
