Life

Gal-On came to Israel from the Soviet Union with her family in 1960 at the age of four . She completed her military service in the administration of the parachute brigade and reached the rank of non-commissioned officer. She earned a bachelor's degree in special education from Beit Berl and a master's degree in educational philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

In 1984 she began her political career as an organizer of protests against the forced closure of a cinema in Petach Tikva on Shabbat . At the same time she worked as assistant to the general secretary of the Ratz party , David Zucker. In 1988 she participated in the founding of the protest organization "The 21st Year", which was directed against the Israeli occupation that had existed since 1967. In 1989 she was one of the founders of the non-governmental organization B'Tselem , the Israeli information center for human rights in the occupied territories, and served as its first executive director.

In 1994 she was elected General Secretary of the Ratz. At that time Ratz formed the Alliance Meretz with two other parties, under whose name the three united in 1997 to form a new party. Since then she has remained a member of the party leadership. From 1998 to 1999 she was executive director of the International Center for Peace in the Middle East, based in Tel Aviv.

From 1999 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2017 she was a member of the Knesset . In 2008 she ran for the first time for chairmanship. In 2012 she was finally elected chairwoman. In October 2017, she gave up her seat in parliament and stated that she would remain party chairman and devote herself to renewing the party structures with all her might.

After she had prevailed with her proposal to have the next party executive elected by primary election of all members and not by party congress delegates, she announced at the end of February 2018 that she would withdraw her candidacy as party chairman. At the end of March 2018, Tamar Zandberg was elected her successor.
