Tithe Barn (Foulden)
The tithe barn of Foulden is a tithe barn in the Scottish village of Foulden in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The barn is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .
history
The original construction period of the barn is difficult to narrow down today. The reason for this is essentially substantial renovations in the 18th and 19th centuries. A chimney that was probably added in the 19th century is no longer preserved. Only remains can still be found in the interior. Besides the Whitekirk tithe barn, the Foulden barn is the only known tithe barn in Scotland.

The barn is on the western edge of Foulden right next to Foulden Parish Church . The two-story, elongated building with a full basement is 26 m long and 17 m wide. Its masonry is made of rubble from sandstone , with openings lined with cream-colored sandstone. The gables are made as a stepped gable . The entrance on the west side is accessible via a front staircase. Above this is a round arched window with a weathered keystone . Another arched window can be found on the opposite east side. Below that, another door is surrounded by two window openings that are now closed. On the street side, the building is unadorned. Only the beginnings of a wooden pulley frame can be seen. On the south side, on the other hand, there are two doors and window openings. The building closes with a slate roof .
The intermediate floor is missing in the interior so that the wooden roof structure is visible. A wooden staircase leading to the basement has been preserved. The remains of a fireplace can be found on the east side.
