Zeki Demirkubuz

Zeki Demirkubuz (born October 1, 1964 in Isparta , Turkey ) is a Turkish director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

After attending school in Gönen , Zeki Demirkubuzer moved to Istanbul . After a semester at a university in Istanbul, he gave up his studies and began to work in workshops. After the military coup in 1980 , he was imprisoned and tortured for three years. During this time he began to be interested in literature and discovered Dostoevsky . After his release he worked as a street vendor in various cities in Anatolia. He wanted to postpone his obligation to military service as much as possible and therefore decided to return to school. He attended evening school and ended up at Istanbul University Faculty of Communication.

Zeki Demirkubuz came to the film industry by assisting the director Zeki Ökten. Until he shot his first feature film C Blok ("Block C") in 1994, he assisted with other directors. After the film C Blok , Demirkubuz worked as an independent director and wrote his own scripts . International critics and a wide audience got to know Demirkubuz through his second film Masumiyet ("Innocence") - at the Venice Film Festival . The third film, Ücüncü Sayfa (“Third Side”) by Demirkubuz has been shown in several film festivals both in Turkey and Locarno , at the Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR) and others.

At this time, Zeki Demirkubuz began to work on his trilogy Karanlık Üzerine Öyküler ("Stories about the Darkness"). The first two films in this trilogy, Yazgi ("Fate") and Itiraf ("Confession") were shown in the 2002 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. In the third film in the trilogy - Bekleme Odasi ("Waiting Room") - Zeki Demirkubuz was the main character in his own film. In 2006 he shot Kader (“Determination”), a prequerel of the film Masumiyet (“Innocence”), and won the 2006 Antalya Film Festival in the “Best Film” category. In 2009 his film Kiskanmak ("Envy") was released. This was followed in 2012 by Yeralti ("underground"), 2015 by Bulanti ("nausea") and in 2016 by Kor ("embers").
