Zelmo Beaty (born October 25, 1939 in Hillister , Tyler County , Texas , † August 27, 2013 in Bellevue , Washington ) was an American basketball player who played in the NBA and ABA on the position of the center . Although Beaty was not one of the tallest players in his position with a height of 2.06 m, he was considered a dominant figure and led the Utah Stars to their first championship after moving to the ABA. In 2016, Beaty was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for career achievement .

Career

Beaty played for Prairie View A&M in college, which he led to the NAIA Championship in his senior year . However, he was only signed in third place in the 1962 NBA draft by the St. Louis Hawks , since Prairie View was a comparatively small and unknown college.

In his first seven years in the NBA, Beaty played in two NBA all-star games, and was called to the all-rookie team in 1962. After moving to ABA, Beaty helped the Utah Stars to the championship as a center in his first season in 1970.

Others

Beaty had to suspend a full year, in which he worked as a bank clerk, due to a corresponding regulation after his move from the NBA to the ABA. Even after his active career as an athlete, he worked in finance, but also as a substitute teacher for sports in the Seattle area .
