Zeltinger sundial
The term Zeltinger Sundial describes a German vineyard in Zeltingen , a district of the municipality of Zeltingen-Rachtig on the Moselle . The wines (mainly Riesling ) grown in this 21.5 hectare single site are known nationwide. The location is steep and sloping to the south-southwest. The vines thrive on Devonian and slate weathered soils . The single layer Zeltinger Sonnenuhr is part of the large Münzlay site .
There are other vineyards with the name Sonnenuhr in Brauneberg , Maring-Noviand , Neumagen-Dhron , Pommern , and Wehlen . In the immediate vicinity is the single site Wehlener Sonnenuhr .
The sundial , which still exists today, was built in 1620 by an abbot of the Himmerod monastery and is the largest sundial in a German vineyard. On a real sunny day you can read all the hours on it. It is one of the most important landmarks of the place and is considered the oldest sundial on the Moselle.
