The Zenarchopteridae are a family of garfish-like (Beloniformes) fish from freshwater and brackish water of Southeast Asia . They are small, 3.6 to 19 centimeters long, elongated fish whose lower jaw is greatly elongated. The fins are small, the dorsal and anal fins are located far back on the body, as in many shock predators. They mainly eat insects and their larvae from the surface of their living waters.

Reproduction

Like the viviparous toothcarps (Poeciliinae), the fish have internal fertilization. The anal fin of the males is transformed into a mating organ called andropodium . Three genera ( Dermogenys , Hemirhamphodon and Nomorhamphus ) are viviparous, the others lay fertilized eggs.

Systematics

The Zenarchopteridae were previously counted as a subfamily to the half-beak (Hemiramphidae). A phylogenetic study from 2004, however, rejects the monophyly of the Hemiramphidae. The Zenarchopteridae gain family status and are the sister group of the garfish (Belonidae). The other half- beaked (with the exception of Arrhamphus and Hyporhamphus ) are closer to the flying fish (Exocoetidae).
