Oxyporhamphus micropterus is a species of fish from the half- beakfamily(Hemiramphidae). They are small, about 18 centimeters long, elongated fish, whose pectoral fins are enlargedsimilar to those of the flying fish . They lack the typical elongated lower jaw of the other half-beak species.
Oxyporhamphus micropterus is marine and lives in the Red Sea , in the Indo-Pacific from the Arabian Sea and East Africa to Japan and Mexico to Peru , as well as in the western and eastern Atlantic from North Carolina to Brazil and from Cape Verde to Luanda .
Systematics
Oxyporhamphus micropterus is classified as a basal flying fish (Exocoetidae) or as a half- beak , depending on the author . A phylogenetic study sees Oxyporhamphus as a half-beak within the genus Hemiramphus . There are two subspecies:
- Oxyporhamphus micropterus micropterus (Valenciennes, 1847), Pacific & Indian Ocean
- Oxyporhamphus micropterus similis Bruun, 1935, Atlantic
A second species temporarily assigned to the genus ( Oxyporhamphus convexus (Weber & de Beaufort, 1922)) is now part of the Hemiramphus genus again.
