The Zeniontidae are a family of Johns fish (Zeiformes). They live in the seas around South Africa and in the tropical and subtropical western Pacific , in Japan , Australia and New Zealand and off the coast of Chile at depths of 200–600 meters.

features

The body of the fish is about 2.5 times as long as it is high, they have 25 to 27 vertebrae . The upper jaw can be extended extremely far. The eye diameter is greater than or equal to the length of the mouth crack. The jaws have small teeth. The pelvic fins have a single, large, serrated hard ray , the anal fin none, one or two small hard rays, and the pectoral fins 12 to 18 fin rays.

The fish are 7 to 16 centimeters long.

species

There are seven species in three genera . The first two genera were previously placed in the Zeidae , Zenion was the only one of the Zeniontidae.
