Zenonas Rokus Rudzikas (born August 16, 1940 in the village of Gulbiniškės, Lazdijai Rayon , Lithuanian SSR ; † June 8, 2011 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian physicist and from 2003 to 2009 President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LMA).

Life

After graduating from high school with distinction in Assino ( Russian SFSR ) in 1957 , Zenonas Rokus Rudzikas graduated from the Physics Faculty of Vilnius University with distinction in 1962 . In 1965 he received his doctorate at the University of Vilnius and in 1972 he completed his habilitation on the subject of "With regard to the question of the spectral theory of many-electron atoms". From 1981 to 2011 Rudzikas was a professor, a real member of the Science Academy (since 1994) and from 2003 to 2009 President.

The main work of Rudzikas was in the field of theoretical atomic spectroscopy , plasma physics and astrophysics .

He campaigned for the European integration of Lithuanian science and, for example, signed a cooperation agreement with CERN . As editor of the Lithuanian physics journal ( Lietuvos fizikos žurnalo ), he successfully endeavored to get it recognized by the EPS and to be included in the Inspec index.
