Censorship in Algeria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The working conditions of journalists in Algeria have developed since independence in 1962 : after 1990 a press code was abolished, which significantly contributed to freedom of the press . Even so, more than 70 journalists were killed by security forces and Islamists during the Algerian civil war in the 1990s. Another sixty journalists were killed between 1993 and 1998.

Situation in the 1990s

Recently, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika ordered the suspension of several newspapers, had journalists such as Mohammad Benchichou , editor-in-chief of Le Matin newspaper , arrested and forced other reporters into mostly French exile.

The index of press freedom in Algeria, the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is at about 40% in five years. The global association of reporters, along with the newspaper L'Humanité, condemned the capture of Mohammad Benchicou. He was sentenced to two years in prison for writing about corruption in Algeria. Benchichou received the PEN / Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award in 2006 .

Alongside this case, the country has seen many attacks on freedom of the press in recent years. The La Tribune newspaper was discontinued in 1996. Also, El Watan suffered attacks by the Algerian government. They have been targeted by government forces and Islamists, according to ROG and the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ). Journalists from the Liberté and Le Matin newspapers were forced to go into exile in France.

Situation 2007: The conference was stopped

A technical conference on the subject of Pour la Vérité, la Paix et la Conciliation ( For Truth, Peace and Unification ), which was organized by various associations to combat the disappearance of people during the civil war, was prevented by the Algerian authorities on February 7, 2007. This “new” forum of censorship has been condemned many times, including by the Fédération internationale des ligues des droits de l'Homme .
