It was founded because in 1902 the bourgeois-conservative General Association of German Acquisitions and Economic Cooperatives, the SPD and cooperatives closely related to the trade unions (the so-called "Hamburg direction") excluded. At its peak in 1922, the ZdK had 1,350 member cooperatives with a turnover of 1.24 billion Reichsmarks. The cooperatives had thus become an important economic and power factor. They were therefore also referred to as the "third pillar" of the labor movement .

After the National Socialists came to power , the SA occupied the administration building of the ZdK in Hamburg on May 2, 1933. The ZdK was dissolved and reappeared under the old name after the war.

The crisis in the consumer cooperatives from the 1970s and the collapse of Coop AG had led to a loss of members and a realignment.

Today's development

Today the association is further developing the concept of cooperatives by promoting the establishment of new cooperatives in the service sector . Cooperatives in the energy supply such as Greenpeace Energy , schools, village shops, world shops, bookshops, cinemas, housing projects, coffee importers, housing cooperatives , historians and business consultants form the core of the ZdK membership.
