Karl Schmidtchen , also Carl Schmidtchen, (born November 26, 1858 in Oberzug near Freiberg , Saxony; † November 15, 1923 ) was a German miner , consumer cooperative and member of the first board of directors of the Central Association of German Consumers' Associations (ZdK) founded in 1903 .

Consumer cooperative

Karl Schmidtchen was a miner by profession. He became the managing director of the consumer association in Potschappel . Then he was appointed to the consumer association for Harburg-Wilhelmsburg and the surrounding area and later took over the management of this consumer cooperative. In the address list from 1900 addresses of the chairmen of the local trade union cartels and shop stewards of the trade unions , he is listed with his apartment in: Harburg an der Elbe, Lindenstr. 10, 1 et.

In 1904 he became managing director of the Magdeburg-Neustadt consumer association . In 1909 he became secretary of the Association of Consumer Cooperatives in Rhineland-Westphalia.

Since 1903 he was a board member of the newly founded Central Association of German Consumer Associations and the publishing house of the Central Association of German Consumer Cooperatives of Heinrich Kaufmann and Co. The board appointed him its secretary. In 1908 he resigned from the board of the ZdK and the publishing company.

In 1919 he resigned from the secretariat of the Rhineland-Westphalian Association.

Mayor of Düsseldorf

During the riots in January 1919 , which also spread to Düsseldorf , the Mayor of Düsseldorf Adalbert Oehler was expelled on January 10 by the executive committee of the workers' council and Karl Schmidtchen was appointed mayor. When government troops marched in on February 28, the leaders of the Spartacists, including Karl Schmidtchen, had withdrawn.
