The Center for Social Research Halle eV (zsh) at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg was founded in 1995 by Burkart Lutz together with university lecturers from Halle. Since 1996, this is zsh an affiliated institute of the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg . Everhard Holtmann has headed it since 2012 .

The legal form is that of a registered association, the seat is in Halle (Saale) . Approx. 15 employees work in the institute, mainly with social science training. Since 2010 the zsh has been actively involved in vocational training to become a specialist in market and social research . The zsh is actively involved in the training of social scientists in Halle within the framework of teaching commitments and the supervision of interns, diploma and doctoral students and the employment of student assistants .

The research area is the sociology of work and industry, as well as projects, the results of which are included in the scientific discussions on the one hand and are recommendable for politics and companies on the other. The clients include various federal and state ministries (e.g. the Federal Ministry for Education and Research or the Ministry for Economics and Labor of the State of Saxony-Anhalt ), foundations (such as the Hans-Böckler-Foundation or the Otto-Brenner) Foundation ) as well as companies, employer and employee representatives and regional authorities .

The zsh maintains cooperative relationships with other research institutions in the Federal Republic, e.g. B. the Institute for Employment Research (iab), the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), the Lower Saxony Institute for Economic Research (NIW) and the Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH). In the university sector, the Halle Center for Social Research conducts research in the Collaborative Research Center 580 “Social development after the system upheaval. Discontinuity, Tradition and Structural Development ”of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena .

Financing is done exclusively through project funds.

The research work currently focuses on the following areas:

  • Labor market, training systems, confluence and career paths

Typical content of this focus are labor market processes, educational and work histories, civil work , action orientations and skills of different groups of people (eg. As young people, women) and training systems with an emphasis on vocational education and training.

  • Company structure and operational strategies

Questions of company reorganization, HR strategies and inter-company networking as well as the compatibility of the requirements of the world of work and living (especially with shift work) and the compatibility of gainful employment and care are dealt with here. There is a special focus on working with small and medium-sized enterprises ( SMEs ).

A main focus of the content-related work is on the consequences of demographic change for developments on the labor market and in the dual vocational training system in the Federal Republic of Germany . For this purpose, empirical studies are carried out at the zsh using the means of quantitative social research . These include u. a. Telephone surveys of companies in the CATI laboratory run by the zsh .
