Zhang Ailing ( Chinese  張愛玲  /  张爱玲 , Pinyin Zhāng Àilíng , W.-G. Chang Ai-ling ; also Eileen Chang ; born September 30, 1920 in Shanghai , Republic of China ; † September 8, 1995 in Los Angeles , United States ) a Chinese writer and screenwriter . It is one of the modern classics of Chinese literature.

Life

Born and raised in Shanghai, Zhang was known throughout her life for her love stories and novels , which often include emotional abysses and dark sides.

In 1943 she published her first novel Love in a Fallen City ( 傾城之戀  /  倾城之恋 , Qīngchéng zhī liàn ), with which she became the most famous author in Shanghai. In 1953 she left Shanghai and worked for the American News Agency in Hong Kong .

The novel The Rice Sprout Song was written in English while still in Hong Kong. In 1955, she moved to the United States , where she translated The Rice Sprout Song into Chinese - this version first appeared in Taiwan in 1968 - and wrote other novels. The Fall of the Pagoda and The Book of Changes did not find a publisher for a long time and were published posthumously (2010).

Her work often deals with the tense relationship between men and women. The film adaptation of her short story Sè, jiè by the Taiwanese film director Ang Lee received the Golden Lion at the 2007 Venice Film Festival .
