Zhang Zhizhong

Zhang Zhizhong ( Chinese  張治中  /  张治中 , Pinyin Zhāng Zhìzhōng , W.-G. Chang Chih-chung ; born October 27, 1890 in Caohu , Anhui , Chinese Empire ; † April 6, 1969 in Beijing , People's Republic of China ) was a general of the Kuomintang the Republic of China . He commanded the 5th Army in 1932 during the First Battle of Shanghai and in 1937 was the commander of the 9th Army Group in the Second Battle of Shanghai during the Second Sino-Japanese War .

Jung Chang and Jon Halliday claim in their book Mao (see literature) that Zhang Zhi-zhong, as an agent (" mole ") of the USSR and the CCP, through targeted misinformation and unprovoked attacks against the Japanese army, played a decisive role at the beginning of the Second Japanese Army. In 1949, when Chiang Kai-shek and his supporters withdrew to Taiwan from the overwhelming force of the Red Army, Zhang stayed on the mainland and joined the communists.

In 1954 he became vice chairman of the National Defense Council of the People's Republic of China.
