The Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) (often simply referred to as Zimbra ) is an e-mail and groupware solution from Synacor Inc. Zimbra is primarily operated via a web interface . The web interface was consistently developed as an Ajax application from the start . Standard protocols such as IMAP and WebDAV are also supported.

User access

Web interface

Users can access their e-mail mailboxes through a web interface .

Zimbra Desktop

The Zimbra offline client (also Zimbra Desktop ) is currently available in version 7.3.1 for Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS and Linux. It is almost completely identical to the web front end in terms of appearance and operation. The offline client is a Mozilla Prism application.

Microsoft Outlook and Apple connectors

With the MAPI Connector of the Zimbra Network Edition, Microsoft Outlook versions 2003, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016 can be connected to the Zimbra server. The Zimbra groupware functions are then available to the user. In particular, Outlook users can access resources (e-mail, calendar, address book, etc.) from other participants.

With the iSync Connector of the Zimbra Network Edition, various Mac OS programs can be connected. Is provided for. B. the synchronization of iCal and the data exchange via CalDAV.

Thunderbird, KMail, Evolution, etc. a.

The Zimbra server supports IMAP and POP access (just like IMAPs and POP3s). This means that all mail programs that support one of these protocols can be used.

Mobile devices

ActiveSync

With the Zimbra Network Edition, e-mails, calendar entries and the address book can be synchronized with mobile devices (provided they support ActiveSync). A connection of SyncML -based devices is possible via a Funambol server or with Z-Push and the Z-Push Zimbra backend.

Blackberry

With the Zimbra Blackberry Connector, a Blackberry Enterprise server can be connected to the Zimbra server. This allows Blackberry handhelds (Blackberry PDAs) to be synchronized with Zimbra mailboxes. E-mails, address book, calendar and tasks are synchronized.

Editions

Zimbra is offered in two versions.

Open Source Edition

The Zimbra Open Source Edition License places the server under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and its environment under the Common Public Attribution License (CPAL).

Older versions are available from the Yahoo! Public License (YPL), a weakly copylefted license that is similar to the Common Public License . The YPL has been recognized by the FSF as a free software license . In the Zimbra Public License (ZPL) only the former parent company Yahoo is replaced by VMware .

Zimbra was originally created under the Mozilla Public License (MPL).

Network Edition

In addition to the open source variant, Zimbra Inc. sells the Zimbra Network Edition under a proprietary license. It differs from the open source edition in several important ways. The Network Edition includes a. a MAPI interface, iSync connector and supports ActiveSync . On the server side, it offers structured data backup with point-in-time recovery mechanisms as well as administrator functions that can be delegated.

server

The Zimbra server (also the Network Edition) is largely based on open source software. Zimbra uses OpenLDAP as a directory service , and MySQL is used as a database to store certain metadata . Postfix is used as the SMTP engine, while Amavis , SpamAssassin and ClamAV are used to filter for spam and viruses on the server side. The heart of the Zimbra server is the mailbox server, written in Java , which runs in a Jetty web container environment.

Zimbra Inc.

The startup Zimbra Inc. was founded in 2003 and bought by Yahoo in September 2007 for 350 million US dollars . In January 2010 it was announced that Yahoo had sold the business to VMware . In July 2013, VMware announced that it had sold Zimbra to Telligent Systems, which then renamed Zimbra Inc. This was taken over by Synacor on August 18, 2015 for USD 24.5 million.
