The Cistercian Abbey Colen (also: Kolen or Marienlof ) is since 1822 Belgian monastery of Cistercian nuns in Kerniel, Borgloon , Limburg (Belgium) , diocese of Hasselt .

history

The Order of the Holy Cross populated 1432-1797 northwest Liege in Borgloon founded by Maria van Colen Abbey Mariënlof ( "Marienlob"). In 1822 Maximilienne Guillaume, the last nun of the Cistercian monastery of Wauthier-Braine (joined in 1791), who had joined the Soleilmont monastery in 1815 , and Jérôme Minsart, the last monk of the Cistercian monastery of Boneffe , bought the property together. They founded a Cistercian community which (as in Soleilmont) ran a school for poor children. After the death of Minsart (now pastor in Namur ), the monastery was looked after by the Bornem Cistercian abbey (under Abbot Robertus van Ommeren ) from 1837 . The founder died on September 2, 1845. In 1968 the monastery was officially incorporated into the Cistercian order and in 1990 it was elevated to the status of an abbey.

The monastery, in which the artist Martin Aubée (1729–1806) worked from 1764 to 1777, has considerable art treasures, including the shrine of Odilia of Cologne , the prayer seat of St. Lutgard of Tongeren and a choir stalls in the Liege style from the second half 18th century.
