Florival Cistercian Abbey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Florival was 1218-1796 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Archennes / Eerken , Grez-Doiceau , province of Walloon Brabant , in Belgium .

history

In 1218 the Cistercian convent Florival (Latin: Florida-Valle ) was founded in Archennes, northeast of Wavre , on the Dijle , after a previously local Benedictine convent struggled to survive. After looting, pillage and destruction in the 16th and 17th centuries, which forced the nuns to flee temporarily to Leuven , Brussels or Namur , the monastery was rebuilt in the 18th century, but closed in 1796 as the French Revolution advanced tore off. In Florival Castle from the 19th century there is now a Belgian civil defense school . A train station and a street also bear the name of the former monastery.
