Cistercian abbey L'Olive

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of L'Olive was 1233-1796 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Morlanwelz , Hainaut in Belgium .

history

The nunnery Notre Dame de l'Olive in the forest of Mariemont (between Mons and Charleroi ), founded in 1218, was incorporated into the Cistercian order in 1233 . It suffered a lot, especially in the 16th century, at times had to move to a refuge in Binche , but survived until 1794 near Mariemont Castle (where Maria Elisabeth of Austria died in 1741 ) and was officially abolished in 1796, later demolished. Thanks to the owners of the Mariemont park, the Warocqué industrial dynasty, the archaeological excavation of the remains of the foundation walls took place, but these are now overbuilt. In Morlanwelz and La Louvière , street names (“Rue de l'Olive”) are reminiscent of the abbey.
