from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Sainte-Hoïlde was 1228-1791 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Bussy-la-Côte, a municipality in the department of Meuse in France .

history

The nunnery founded by Heinrich II von Bar in 1228 8 kilometers northwest of Bar-le-Duc on the Ornain River (in the vicinity of the Cistercian monastery Lisle-en-Barrois ) was the Holy Hoildis (also: Hulda von Troyes ) from the time of the Merovingians consecrated (after whose sister the town of Sainte-Menehould is named). The name of the monastery had many variants over the centuries, including Monasterium Sanctæ-Hoildis , Sancta-Ohyldis, Sancta-Hoïldia, Abbacia Sanctæ-Ashuldis, Sainte-Ashoul, Sainte-Houlde, Saint-Houd, Sainte-Hou, Saint-Hou . In 1791 the convent was dissolved by the French Revolution and the buildings dismantled. Today, in Val-d'Ornain, the Route de Sainte-Hoïlde commemorates the monastery. There is a farm on site ( Sainte Hould ). Parts of the earlier equipment are in the surrounding villages.
