The Cistercian Abbey of Villers-Canivet was 1147-1792 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Villers-Canivet , Calvados in France .

history

Savigny Abbey founded a nuns' priory in 1127 northwest of Falaise in Villers-Canivet , which became Cistercian in 1147 together with the mother monastery . The monastery, which belonged to the diocese of Sées , received grants and protections from Roger de Montbray (1118–1188), Johann Ohneland , Philip Augustus , Louis the Holy and Philip the Fair . After it had shrunk to seven nuns in 1572, there was a new boom and in 1630 the daughter monastery Torigny was founded . The monastery, which now had 36 choir nuns, was elevated to a royal abbey in 1681 ( Abbaye Sainte-Marie aux Dames ). From 1739 the abbess Marie-Louise de Fransure built all new buildings except the church. But in 1792, shortly before the completion of the buildings, the French Revolution led to the dissolution of the monastery and the dismantling of most of the buildings. Among the few remains (under restoration since 1976, under monumental protection since 1994), the portal structure stands out, as does the almost completely preserved monastery wall. The seven hectare park area includes a pond.
