The Cistercian Monastery of Zagreb (Sancta Maria de Zagrabia) was a medieval Cistercian abbey in Croatia . It was located on Dolac in the Kaptol district in the Croatian capital Zagreb .
history
The monastery is said to have been built by Archdechant Peter around 1257 on St. Jakobs (or Aegidia) Island near Zagreb and was first settled by Kostanjevica Monastery and then by Viktring Monastery . Another founding date is 1274. After that, the monastery was a subsidiary of the Abbey of Villers-Bettnach (near Saint-Hubert ) in Lorraine , which in turn goes back to the primary abbey of Morimond . Connections in the south-east European area existed for Morimond through his abbot Heinrich von Kärnten. Between 1307 and 1315 the monastery was moved to the city of Zagreb. The monastery went out in 1510 by papal order.
Plant and buildings
The monastery is depicted on a postage stamp of the state of Croatia, which was independent in World War II, from 1943 (design: Karl Seizinger after a painting by Vladimir Kirin ). It was located near the baroque St. Mary's Church.
