history

In 1853 the land near the Wolf River was settled. Mainly German families settled here. The settlement was founded by Benjamin Metzig from Oppelsdorf near Zittau , who arrived here at the age of 31 with his wife and two sons in 1854. Another four German families settled here as early as 1855.

In 1854 Benjamin Metzig bought 200 acres of woodland as Sections 12 and 13 from the United States Government. The first houses were built from logs. Grain and potatoes were grown and livestock was raised. Some of the settlers worked in Clayton or Vinland to earn money to feed their families.

Together with his wife Johanna, Benjamin Metzig made one eighth of the area he acquired available for the construction of a school building. In 1859 a wooden barrack was built for the first school, but in 1888 it had to give way to a new larger school building. Between 1928 and 1931 there was a school newspaper ( Zittau School News ). The school closed in 1948.

The first Lutheran church, founded by two missionaries from the Synod of Missouri , was built as early as 1857. The current church building was built in 1902, the associated cemetery ( Immanuel Cemetery ) was laid out between 1920 and 1925. German was the official language in school and in church, although four German dialects were predominant in the village itself. Confirmation was held in German until 1929.

JA Becker opened the first shop in 1880. He also set up the first post office, which he named "Zittau". Metzig himself opened a blacksmith's shop a short time later. A cheese factory was established in 1892. After the cheesemaker was not trusted and there was repeated friction, 13 farmers got together and built a new cheese factory in 1904, the Union Star cheese factory .

The name Zittau appears on the maps for the first time in 1909, before this settlement of houses was only referred to as “Metzig's corner”. The district of Putzig was later united with Zittau.

In 1925, when electricity also found its way here, Zittau had a population of 187. In 2005 Zittau only had about 20 inhabitants.
