Zlatko Aleksovski

Zlatko Aleksovski (born January 8, 1960 in Pakrac , SR Croatia , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Bosnian-Croatian prison commandant during the Croatian-Bosniak War (1992-1994), who was indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and because of War crimes committed by prisoners in the Lašva Valley in Bosnia and Herzegovina was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Role in the Croatian-Bosniak war

During the Croatian-Bosniak War (1992–1994), Aleksovski was the prison commander of the Kaonik prison in the Busovača municipality from January to May 1993 . During this time several hundred Bosnian Muslim civilians were held there by the Hrvatsko vijeće obrane (HVO). Under Aleksovski, numerous prisoners were subjected to inhumane treatment, including excessive and cruel interrogation, physical and psychological torture, and forced labor . The prisoners were also used as human shields , killed or otherwise murdered in the process. After Aleksovski's replacement as prison commandant in Kaonik, he became HVO district manager in Mostar prison .

Condemnation

Aleksovski was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison on May 7, 1999 for war crimes. The Appeals Chamber increased the prison term on September 22, 2000 to 7 years.
