The sable or sliced lint ( Ballerus sapa ) is a freshwater fish found in the rivers Danube , Dniester , Dnepr , Bug , Don , Kuban , Volga , Kama , Vjatka , Ural and Terek . There it lives mainly in slowly flowing stretches of water. It rarely becomes longer than 35 centimeters and heavier than 800 grams. With its silver color and the strongly flattened, high-backed body, it is very similar to the white bream . Chest and pelvic fins are yellowish, dorsal, caudal and anal fins are gray, the latter with up to 48 soft rays being much longer than that of the gusters. The spawning season is from April to May in herb-rich riparian zones. Insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans are its main food. The population is endangered.
The sable has now migrated into the Rhine via the Main-Danube Canal and is regularly detected at the fish passage of the Iffezheim barrage.
