Zogaj is a village around ten kilometers west of Shkodra in northern Albania . It lies on the shores of Lake Skadar , just over a kilometer from the border with Montenegro . The village on the slopes of Tarabosh had less than 400 inhabitants in 2007.

There was no border crossing to Montenegro until the end of 2019, but it was decided by the governments of both countries in 2018. The next place is Shiroka , about five kilometers further east. The villages belong to the Administrative Administrative Zone No. 1 of the city of Shkodra, and are therefore considered to be districts (lagja) of Shkodra, connected via the SH24 . Together, the two villages form an excursion zone on the lake: They offer peace and seclusion, there are a few restaurants in town, you can swim in the lake or hike on the mountain. Fishing has a long tradition, while the Zogaj women are known for their carpets.

Due to its proximity to the border, visiting the village was only permitted with special permission until 1991. Since then - as in most rural regions - there has been a strong emigration from Zogaj: around 80% of the population are said to have left the place.

Zogaj is one of 100 villages in which the Albanian government wants to specifically promote rural tourism .
