The Zoigê Wetland ( Chinese  若尔盖 湿 地 , Pinyin Ruòěrgài Shīdì ), also called the Songpan Grasslands , is one of the three great wetlands in China . It is located predominantly in the north of the Sichuan province in the central west of the country and occupies about 2,600 km² from the eastern part of the Tibet highlands at an altitude of 3,300 to 3,600 meters above sea level . To the west it extends over the border from Sichuan into the provinces of Gansu and Qinghai .

geography

The wetland, which has been formed by heavy rain and snow , is located in a region that is only partially drained due to long periods of frost (fewer than 20 frost-free days a year) . It is bounded in the east by the Min Shan Mountains , in the south by the Qionglai Shan , in the west by the Golog Shan and in the north by A'nyê Maqên , Xiqing Shan and the western part of the Qin Ling . The Huang He flows through the western part of the region from south to north , for which the wetland is the main source of water. Under the uneven surface of the wetland there is a layer of peat about two to three meters thick , which in some places even reaches a height of six to seven meters.

history

The region was crossed by the Chinese Communists during the Long March in 1934/35 and then declared a wilderness area. In the 1970s, trenches were dug, parts of the wetland artificially drained and cattle, sheep and horses were allowed to graze on the reclaimed grassland. In 1994 a landscape protection area was established in the area , which is now home to the axial deer and the black-necked crane .
