Zoni

The expression Zoni is used as an ironic to insulting term for (former) GDR citizens , the existence of an East German ethnic group is controversial.

The expression is derived from the Soviet occupation zone in Germany , which was pejoratively referred to as the eastern zone or just a zone , especially among citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany , since the GDR, which was founded out of this zone in 1949, was not recognized as a sovereign state in the west for a long time . The German band Norbert & die Feiglinge , based on the melody of Hello Dolly! Recorded a song from the musical of the same name entitled Hallo Zoni . After the fall of the Wall in 1989 came alongside Zoni also Ossi as opposed to Westerner , as before, only the West Berliners to distinguish Germans called the turn in the GDR instead Bundi were called.

The iconic representation of the "Zonis" is the figure of the " Zonen-Gaby ", which was shown on the cover of the satirical magazine Titanic in November 1989. It shows a woman with a stereotypical hairstyle and clothes, a peeled cucumber in her hand and the headline “My first banana”. The cover picture alluded to the clichés of the shortage of bananas and the widespread use of cucumbers in the GDR. A woman from Rhineland-Palatinate was shown .
