Zoo & Co. was founded on April 5, 2001 with initially 70 partner companies. In 2003, various own brands appeared in the product range, which were expanded over time. The range of Zoo & Co. includes food and accessories for all pets, regionally also fishing accessories and / or articles for horse owners / equestrian sports. The core competence of the companies is the trade in living animals (small mammals, birds, terrarium animals, freshwater and saltwater aquariums), with the focus on keeping them appropriately. Another focus is on the garden pond area. Here, the companies offer pond plants and animals - including Koi - as well as everything in terms of material and technology for pond construction and maintenance.

Zoo & Co. is a full member of the German Franchise Association and has passed the franchisee satisfaction study with the "F&C Award Silver 2010". The system set two new benchmarks, the top grade 2.51 (old benchmark 2.56) in the area of ​​“business success” and the top grade 2.45 (old benchmark 2.89) in the area of ​​“support for local / regional advertising”.

In the 2009 financial year, over 8.5 million customers made purchases in the system's specialist stores. The individual franchisees set a total of more than 145 million euros under the Zoo & Co. brand with a total growth of around 10% compared to 2008.
