He was the son of Yerucham Truly ( Hebrew יְרֻחַם אָשֵׁר וַרְהַפְטִיג) and Rivka Feinstein ( Hebrew רִבְקָה פַיִינְשטַיִין). During World War II , Rabbi Echtig convinced the Japanese consul Chiune Sugihara to issue visas for the entire yeshiva in the city of Mir , which saved many lives. In 1941, Wahrhaftig and his family left Lithuania to flee to Japan. On June 5, 1941, the Wahrhaftig family boarded the Japanese liner Hikawa Maru in the port of Yokohama and arrived in Vancouver on June 17 . Truly described the trip as “a summer vacation and the war seemed so far away,” but he added, “I found no peace because of the heavy responsibility that lay upon me for letting the Jewish refugees face the difficulties they faced had to help. ”In 1947 he immigrated to Palestine, where he became a member of the HaPo'el haMisrachi , a religious Zionist party. Since 1948, Wahrhaftig has given lectures at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem , a task he held until 1963. HaPo'el haMisrachi contested the 1951 elections alone. Although the party received only two seats, it was part of the governing coalition of David Ben-Gurion, and from 1951 to 1955, Wahrhaftig was a member of the HaPo'el haMisrachi Knesset in the fifth governing coalition. Truly was appointed deputy minister of religion on January 5, 1953, an office he held until January 26, 1954. In 1956 HaPo'el haMisrachi and Mizrachi merged to form the National Religious Party . On January 9, 1956, he was appointed Minister of Religion as a member of the NRP , and he held this position until July 1, 1958. After the 1961 elections, on November 2, 1961, under the government of Levi Eschkol, Echtig was again Minister of Religion , a position that he himself kept Golda Meir under the two governments until March 10, 1974.
