The Zorkulsee (also Sir-i-kol ) is located in Central Asia in the southern Pamir on the border with the Hindu Kush .
geography
The 38.9 km² large lake , which extends at an altitude of 4130 m on the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan , extends in an east-west direction for almost 20 km. In this direction, the border between the two states runs through the lake, turning south in its extreme eastern part, so that its southern part belongs to Afghanistan and its northern part to Tajikistan.
The Zorkulsee, which is located in an extensive, treeless and vegetation-poor high mountain valley, is surrounded by very high mountains, including the Concord Peak ( 5469 m ), the summit of which is about 15 km south of the lake.
The lake, in which there are several islands, is fed by numerous small streams and drained by the Pamir flowing to the west . The first European documented to visit the lake was British naval officer John Wood in 1838, who named the lake after the British Queen Victoria .
The lake is listed as an important bird area in the Ramsar List .
