Zouk Mikael ( Arabic ذوق مكايل, DMG DUQ Mikayil even Zūq Mīkhā'īl or Zouk Mkayel) is a northern suburb of Beirut in the district Keserwan of the government of Lebanon Mountains in Lebanon . The number of the predominantly Christian inhabitants ( Melkites , Maronites ) of the place is almost 50,000 inhabitants.

Culture

The order of the Melkite Basilian Sisters of Choueir , founded in 1737, built its first monastery here.

In the center of the city there is an Ottoman market ( Suq ), which was modernized in 1995 with arcades and cafes .

UNESCO lists Zouk Mikael as the City of Peace in 1999 .

In 2018, the Asian group's qualifying games for the 2019 World Basketball Championship took place in the Nouhad Nawfal Sports Complex .

Town twinning

The twin town is Rueil-Malmaison in France .
