Christ the Good Shepherd

The listed Catholic Church to Good Shepherd (originally Christ the Good Shepherd and The Good Shepherd ) stands at the intersection of roads Lilienstraße / Dahlienweg in the settlement Löwental , near the airport of the city of Friedrichshafen .

Access to the church is from Lilienstraße, while access to the parish office is from Dahlienweg.

history

The further population growth in the north of Friedrichshafen in the post-war period made it necessary to build another new parish center. Therefore, an area was separated from St. Petrus Canisius and, according to plans by Wilfried Beck-Erlang , the construction of a church and a rectory began on May 2, 1960. The church was designated on December 24, 1961 and consecrated on May 12, 1962 by Carl Joseph Leiprecht . Cracks in the concrete dome appeared early on, so that the dome was covered with copper from 1964 to 1968.

In the immediate vicinity of the airport's runway, a sports plane crashed onto the church roof in 1972, which necessitated extensive repairs to the roof.

In 2006 the church was placed under monument protection. The church was renovated inside in 2010. In 2017/2018 the structural elements made of steel, wood and glass on the facade and bell tower were restored and repaired.

Church building

The church is a shell-shaped dome building. A wide, curved bowl acts as a bell tower, reminiscent of a protecting hand or a shepherd's staff.

Furnishing

The interior is kept simple. In addition to the design of the solid bronze doors by Erich Hauser, the design of the altar area with a cross on the church wall and an artistically designed tabernacle is striking .

organ

The two-part organ with 28  registers was made by Andreas Heinrich Weber, Bollschweil.
