To the Black Camel on Vienna's Bognergasse
The interior of the place

The restaurant Zum Schwarzen Kameel is a traditional restaurant at Bognergasse 5 in Vienna's 1st district, Innere Stadt , which is now run by PuM Friese GmbH under the management of the Friese family.

history

In 1618 Johann Baptist Cameel bought a house that already existed at that time and set up a spice shop . In allusion to his last name, he gave the shop the name it still uses today.

In 1818, the former accountant Joseph Stiebitz , who came from Bohemia ( Leitmeritz district ), took over the restaurant from the previous owner Jacob Partel. The company was now called Joseph Stiebitz & Comp. He expanded the delicatessen trade and later set up a wine bar . The restaurant became increasingly popular and was on November 30, 1825 by the Imperial Court of Justice with the ordinance ddo. November 9th d. J. Number 2266 appointed court specialty merchant . One of the guests was the painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller , who designed and drew today's logo, other guests were Friedrich August Kanne and Ludwig van Beethoven . In 1852 the son of Joseph Stiebitz, Alois Stiebitz, took over the restaurant. At that time the company was called Alois Stiebitz & Comp . In 1866, following a renewed request, he was granted the title of imperial and royal purveyor to the court .

In 1901 the house at Bognergasse 5 was completely rebuilt and the restaurant was given its current appearance in Viennese Art Nouveau style by the architects Portois & Fix . Today the rooms are used as a restaurant, bar and delicatessen store.

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary, a mirror bar by the artist Eva Schlegel was located in front of the restaurant in January and February 2018 , which apparently expanded the facade "into infinity" and reflected the number 400 .
