The Catholic pilgrimage chapel to the Sorrowful Mother is a listed church building in Hoetmar , a district of Warendorf in the Warendorf district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The first documentary mention of a Lady Chapel of the Freckenhorst Abbey at this location dates from 1550.

The hall church with a rectangular floor plan was built in brick in 1735 . The roof is hipped and a sacristy was added to the east. The west side is adorned with a bell tower.

Vesper picture

The altar belongs to the late Baroque Regency style . In the altar piece from the time the church was built there is a stone Vespers from 1440, a late Gothic image of the Mother of God. It was made from Baumberger sandstone in a Westphalian sculptor's workshop. The Pietà is the destination of many pilgrims. The original version was covered by later oil painting.

Numerous votive offerings and pieces of jewelry donated by pilgrims are supposed to prove the miracles that supposedly occurred . The oldest surviving document that attests to such a miracle dates from 1651.
