Richard Harper

Richard Harper (* 1949 in Detroit ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , keyboard , trombone , baritone horn , vocals ), arranger and university professor .

Live and act

Harper studied ethnomusicology and composition at Wesleyan University ; he then earned a Masters from the Manhattan School of Music and a Ph. D. from the Union Institute and University. Throughout his career, Harper has worked with Makanda Ken McIntyre , Jabbo Ware , Fred Ho , Bill Laswell , Archie Shepp , Jaki Byard, and with Anthony Braxton's Tricentric Orchestra, as well as with vocal groups The Four Tops and The Miracles . He has also served as musical director for off-Broadway and regional theaters and arranged for numerous dance, theater and music productions. He initially taught in the American Music, Dance and Theater Program at SUNY Old Westbury , currently at the New School and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College . As part of his teaching activities, Harper leads the vocal ensemble Jazz Voices .
