Aggregate
Aggregates are a group of components of a mixture that is used as a material that is not a primary function carrier. The aggregates belong to the auxiliary materials ( additives ) .
Important functions of the aggregates are:
- As a filler (body) : They give the binding body from the binding agent hold to avoid sedimentation and give the material volume and stability ( matrix of the material).
- As a leaning agent : They initially serve to reduce the required proportion of more expensive binders. In the case of shrinking binder systems, the leaning also helps to reduce shrinkage .
- Composites that give the building material properties of a composite material .
- Hardeners that give the material greater mechanical strength.
Examples:
- The aggregates in construction technology : Mineral fillers of natural or artificial origin that are added in the production of asphalt , concrete , mortar or plaster and determine the character of the building material ; the grains also serve as a leaning agent - in particular in road construction, the standard stipulates that the aggregate should be described as such and not as an aggregate
- the emaciation of ceramics and pottery : highly heat-resistant materials that absorb the enormous loss of clay during firing. The most important modern substance is chamotte
- Fines , as Feinstsände , talc , marble dust and other minerals , chalk , titanium dioxide in renders, filling compounds , stucco , coating materials
- Fibers (for fiber composite materials ) such as mineral wool , glass fibers , carbon fibers , formerly asbestos , wood wool , plant fibers , also straw and animal hair in historical building materials
- Fillers for lightweight materials that are used for structural reasons and for insulation materials in heat and sound insulation : foam , expanded clay , expanded glass , expanded slate , foam glass , perlite , vermiculite , cellulose fibers or flakes, etc.,
- Optical functional elements such as glass spheres as reflectors
- Hard materials in the true sense of the word, or quartz and other selected hard rocks
- Fillers for colorants that give it body, such as chalk or talc
